Dairies in Campos, between tradition and modernity
Campos is a quintessential livestock town, and aside from finding some of the most beautiful beaches on the island in the area, it is worth visiting and getting to know the tradition of artisan dairies, which survive by combining tradition and modernity. They sell traditional products while also offering tours of their facilities to showcase their way of working.
In the Campos area, both small and large dairies typically have Holstein Friesian cows, which come from the Frisia region in the Netherlands, from which they get their name despite being considered a fully integrated Spanish breed.
These animals are known for their optimal milk production, which is used to make all sorts of high-quality artisan products highly sought after by both locals and visitors.
Finca Burguera, three generations of cheese artisans
For over 70 years, Finca Burguera has been producing its well-known artisan cheeses, and thanks to high demand, production has been increasing year after year.
For the Burguera family, it is essential that their products maintain the characteristics that have made them so well-known, while also embracing modernity and improving their facilities, always prioritizing the respect and well-being of the animals.
The dairies have individual beds, automatic cleaning systems, a septic tank that collects manure for later use in farming, and an automatic milking system for the cows.
Their products contain no artificial colors or preservatives, and packaging and sales are handled by the family themselves. Additionally, they offer organized tours to showcase their facilities, cheese-making process, and to sample their excellent products.
S’Hort de Son Covas, another traditional dairy in Campos
S’Hort de Son Covas is another family-owned dairy we find in Campos. It is also a family farm that has withstood the passage of time and the abandonment of the countryside by new generations, to become another key point in the production of quality artisan products.
Son Covas has nearly a hundred cows and has also opted to modernize its facilities to ensure the well-being of the animals and optimal milk production.
Formerly in Mallorca, there were nearly a hundred dairies, and the livestock business was booming. Now, there are barely a dozen farms with animals, and efforts are being made to prevent this sector from disappearing from the island.
In May, Campos hosts the Cow Fair, which attracts many curious visitors and gives hope to farmers that the sector will recover and that the prices paid per liter of milk will be fair and appropriate.
