Discover the historic centre in Pollença

Discover the historic centre in Pollença

The historic center of Pollença, a coastal town located in the northern part of the island of Mallorca, is an architectural and cultural treasure that captivates both visitors and residents alike. This picturesque town, with its cobbled streets and centuries-old buildings, offers a journey back in time through the rich history of the island.

Plaça Major: The Heart of Pollença's Historic Center

The heart of Pollença revolves around the Plaça Major, a public space that has witnessed the daily life of the town for centuries. This square, with its characteristic irregular shape, is surrounded by cafes and restaurants that invite you to enjoy the local cuisine under the shade of ancient trees. On Sundays, the square comes to life with a lively market where you can find fresh island products, local crafts, and a variety of items that reflect Mallorcan culture.

One of the most iconic buildings dominating the Plaça Major is the parish church of Our Lady of the Angels. This imposing structure, built in the 18th century on the foundations of an earlier temple, showcases a mix of architectural styles ranging from late Gothic to Baroque. Its facade, with a monumental staircase and central rose window, is a focal point that catches the eye of everyone visiting the square.

A few steps from the square is the Convent de Sant Domingo, founded in the 16th century. This former Dominican convent now houses the Pollença Municipal Museum, where various archaeological objects and artworks narrate the town's history. The convent's cloister, with its elegant arches and central garden, is a peaceful haven amidst the urban bustle.

The streets of Pollença's historic center are full of charm and character. Carrer Major, one of the main arteries of the historic center, is lined with 17th and 18th-century manor houses, many of which retain their original facades with heraldic shields and finely carved stone portals. These narrow, winding streets, designed to provide shade and coolness during the hot Mediterranean summers, invite you to get lost and discover picturesque corners at every turn.

El Calvari: An Iconic Landmark

One of the most iconic elements of Pollença's center is El Calvari, a stone staircase with 365 steps leading up to a small chapel atop a hill. This path, flanked by cypress trees and Stations of the Cross, not only holds religious significance but also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the old town and the surrounding valley. During Holy Week, El Calvari becomes the setting for processions and ceremonies that attract the faithful and curious from all over the island.

Another historical point of interest is the "Roman" Bridge, although its name is misleading, as it is believed to have been built during the medieval period. This stone bridge, which crosses the Torrent de Sant Jordi, is a reminder of Pollença's strategic importance as a connection point between the coast and the interior of the island.

The historic center of Pollença is not just a collection of monuments and old buildings; it is a living place where traditions are preserved and renewed. Throughout the year, the town hosts various cultural events that enliven its streets and squares. The Pollença Music Festival, held every summer, attracts internationally renowned musicians and turns the cloister of Sant Domingo into a unique stage under the stars.
