Discover the Joan i Pilar Miró Foundation in Palma
"I wish that everything remains as it is when I am gone," said Joan Miró, a painter, sculptor, engraver, ceramist, and one of the greatest surrealism artists associated with Mallorca.
His wish came true on Christmas Day in 1983 when the artist passed away in his beloved Palma, leaving behind an immense legacy that can be visited at the Joan i Pilar Miró Foundation.
Located in a privileged enclave with views of the sea and a beautiful garden, the Foundation is one of the world's most important contemporary art spaces. Here, you'll find not only the vast collection of over 6,000 pieces by the artist but also a cultural center that hosts exhibitions, lectures, and events related to art and literature.
The Joan i Pilar Miró Foundation
When Joan Miró first visited Mallorca, he fell head over heels in love with the island. So much so that he established his workshops in Palma when he permanently moved here in 1956. All of them have remained frozen in time, unchanged since the artist's death, just as he always wished.
At the foundation, you can visit the workshops, wander through their nooks and crannies, and breathe a different air that exists nowhere else in the building, perhaps except for the library. It's in the artist's workspaces where the magic was born and grew. And there it remains, amidst unfinished works, work clothing, and colors that will no longer be used.
The main building of the foundation is of modern style, and here, various works by Miró are exhibited, creating a cozy and unique atmosphere fostered by the building's internal structure. In this place, the sun moves from window to window, creating a pleasant space, albeit strategically designed.
At the back of the foundation are the Mediterranean-style gardens, cool and pleasant, with the added thrill of discovering the artist's sculptures along the way. Each piece is perfectly integrated into nature, and the overall goal is to create an inspiring experience that awakens the senses.
The Pilar Juncosa Library, a haven for book lovers
Before heading out to the garden, you must make a stop at the Pilar Juncosa Library. Access is public, free, and no appointment is necessary. This space, perfect for getting lost in reading or writing, studying even, specializes in contemporary art, especially in Joan Miró and his cultural context.
The library's collection consists of more than 20,000 documents, including monographs, exhibition catalogs, audiovisual material, and magazines from around the world.
The library's content, unlike the artist's workshops, is not unchangeable. The documents, in all formats, are constantly growing thanks to the purchase and donation of copies, as well as the library's own publications or library exchanges with other institutions.
The Joan i Pilar Miró Foundation offers a wide range of activities for all ages, with the intention of bringing art and the figure of Miró closer to anyone who wishes to explore them.
