Excursion to Ses Salines os es Trenc
Es Trenc is one of the most beautiful beaches in southern Mallorca, with fine white sands and intensely blue waters, which at times turn green, shimmering in the sunlight.
Throughout the centuries, the sea trapped within the saltworks of the same name evaporated, leaving behind small salt crystals. As knowledge grew about how to obtain this precious "white gold," the landscape of the salt flats gradually changed to produce more salt, using traditional techniques and without altering the landscape, but rather turning it into one of Mallorca's most valuable ecosystems.
The Salt Flats consist of a vast collection of basins where the concentration of salt per liter of seawater increases. Thanks to an always-open channel, water from the beach enters the basins and, in the process of salt production, enriches and nourishes a small piece of paradise within paradise itself.
In the 1940s and 1950s, the salt flats were renovated, but their raw material remained the sea, and the energy used was the sun and wind.
Visiting the Salt Production Area of Es Trenc Salt Flats
The visit lasts three-quarters of an hour, during which time you walk along the banks of the reservoirs where seawater evaporates slowly to produce salt.
The basins are linked together, and water circulates constantly through them, so the sun and wind can heat it. Along the way, you can see the different steps the water takes to obtain salt, in a circular walk where, if you look closely at the water, you can see small creatures called halophytes, which are red and responsible for the pink hue of some basins, as well as the color of the feathers of the flamingos that live in this area of Mallorca.
The Salt Flats are a natural paradise because, in addition to flamingos, there is a great diversity of birds and plants that live here and reproduce in a protected environment full of opportunities. Depending on the time of year, you can find more or fewer animals, but the visit always has a reward: the mountains of salt that turn this place into an almost lunar space, but with the typical temperature of the Mallorcan Mediterranean.
If the day is very sunny, it will be necessary to wear a hat and sunglasses to block the glare from the white salt mountains in the eyes.
At the end of the visit, there is a small shop where you can purchase Flor de Sal, the brand that has been marketed at the Salt Flats for some time now, enriched with various flavors such as hibiscus, black pepper, paprika, turmeric, or saffron, among many other flavors. Chefs and gastronomy specialists come here to place their orders and thus give a special touch to all their creations.
And if you are with children and feel like it, we recommend that you take advantage of the visit to approach one of the most well-known dairies in Campos, which also crafts its own products by hand and offers tastings to the public. Would you like to know it? You can check it out in this post.
