Excursion to the Ayamans Palace in Lloseta
Lloseta is a small village in the interior of Mallorca, the second smallest on the island, located in the region known as Raiguer, whose undisputed capital is Inca.
Despite its small size, this locality hides many places of interest, excellent restaurants for lunch or dinner, and spectacular houses with a lot of history, such as the Ayamans Palace.
At Mon Port, we love to explore other villages in Mallorca, so today we want to visit this stately palace and the village where it is located.
The Ayamans Palace, next to the Parish Church
It occupies an area of more than 15,000 square meters and is right next to the Parish Church. The Ayamans Palace is an architectural gem, which was the residence of the counts of Ayamans and the barons of Lloseta.
There is not much left of the original structure and knowing that it is an 18th-century building, there is not much graphic documentation either; however, it has undergone many reconstructions and restructurings over the centuries, the last of which were in the late 19th and 20th centuries.
The old building was very important because it served as the administrative or judicial headquarters of the lordship. There was an old estate here, called Son Togores, which became part of the urbanization surrounding the palace.
In the 20th century, the owners of the estate were the March family, well known on the island for their history, heritage, and certain smuggling fame. They were the ones who decided to reform the interior of the palace and, in addition to preserving the artistic works left by the previous owner, María Gual and de Togores, they contributed part of their art collection to the enrichment of the building.
The architect Gabriel Alomar was in charge of the reconstruction of a new facade, the renovation, and the creation of its wonderful gardens.
In 1975, the March family sold the palace to the company Lloseta SA, which used it for a time for cultural events. It is currently privately owned, but the garden can be seen from the outside, as the wall enclosing it has been removed.
The best snack in Lloseta, the cardenal
The Forn Baix de Lloseta has the honor and mission of making the well-known "cardenal," which is named because sixty years ago, during a meal among friends of the oven owners, one of them exclaimed, in relation to this sweet, "this is bocatto di cardinale."
We recommend you to stop by and try one of these pastries, made up of a base of puff pastry cake and filled with cream and meringue, which has given even more fame to the town of Lloseta.
It is no coincidence that at the Forn Baix, they went from making one or two a week to having a large quantity of cardenals available every day.
Another charming town on the island is Valldemossa, which we have already talked about on some occasions on our blog. If you feel like visiting it but want to know what you will find beforehand, we recommend reading this post where we explain the most interesting places in this town.
