Plans to Make in Mallorca in May 2024
During the month of May, Mallorca becomes the stage for parties and fairs directly related to the beginning of spring, which increasingly resembles an early summer.
The Middle Ages, flowers, ancient pirate battles, or wine and cheese become the focus of special fairs and markets that do not occur during the rest of the year and have carved out a space in the agenda for some time.
At Mon Port, we have thoroughly researched all the plans that can be made in May in Mallorca this 2024, and here we offer you some of the best proposals we have found.
The Flower Fair in Costitx
At the beginning of May, Costitx in Flor is celebrated, an event full of beauty and authenticity that turns this small village, the geographical heart of Mallorca, into the center of attention for thousands of visitors.
These are days when the residents get involved to the fullest to decorate the squares, streets, and courtyards, depending on the theme chosen for each place. And this involvement and creativity in decorating with fresh flowers leaves no one indifferent.
The village becomes a hive of visitors strolling through the streets, curious and amazed by the multitude of craft stalls, clothing, wine, craft beer, and local agri-food products. And of course, abundant, and very striking flower and plant stalls.
The Firó de Sóller
For those who enjoy thrills, we recommend visiting the Firó de Sóller, where each year the battle between Moors and Christians that took place in the port of the town in May 1561 is recreated.
The entire town participates in the recreation of historical events, from the rallying cry that Captain Joan Angelats made to the peasants, armed and ready to defend their valley against the advance of the Saracens, to the landing of the invaders on the beach, or the different battles that took place until finally, at dawn, the inhabitants of Sóller and the surrounding villages could declare themselves victorious and drive the Moors out of the town.
It is like attending a huge theatrical performance in which the whole town is involved, and which must be observed as a celebration that takes place in the days before and after the great battle.
The Medieval Market in Capdepera
In the center of Capdepera and on both sides of its famous walls, a weekend that seems to have come out of time is celebrated every May. The walls are adorned with banners, people dress as medieval villagers, drinks are served in ceramic cups, and meat is cooked on immense spits placed over the fire.
The medieval market of Capdepera makes the visitor feel like they are in a movie, transported to medieval times, and they may even witness how the constables of the moment patrolled to prevent rogues and villains from causing trouble, or warriors and mercenaries who take a break on their journey to eat and drink in the village inns.
Not as bellicose as the actors in Sóller, here a tranquil day is recreated, full of parades, dances, music, and many curiosities to learn about medieval Capdepera.
There are more events worth noting for May 2024 in Mallorca. Wine and cheese, for example, become protagonists in the village of Estellencs, in Selva, the Fira de la Creu takes place, where crosses are blessed for a good harvest, and in Búger, the Jai fair takes place, which pays homage to the "jais," which is what grandparents are called in many Mallorcan villages.
