The best bike excursions in Mallorca
J.F. Kennedy once said, "Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride," and if that ride takes place on the roads and paths of Mallorca, the charm multiplies, and by far.
The months of March, April, and May, as well as October and November, are favorites among cyclists for touring the island on two wheels. The heat isn't oppressive, the weather is more tolerable, and sunny days are almost guaranteed.
If this is your sport, we present the best excursions to explore the island by bike, with family or friends.
The Tramontana Road: From Pollença to Andratx
110 kilometers connect Pollença to Andratx in a route that runs along the west coast of the island, passing through the north and reaching the south. It is one of the most spectacular roads in Mallorca, dominating the mountain range, where the mountains and the sea meet.
It is also one of the most demanding excursions and requires some physical preparation. It climbs more than 2,500 meters and crosses Puig Major, the highest peak on the island, passing through Can Costa, Es Grau, or Coll de Sa Gramola, on a winding road that ends upon reaching Andratx.
Along the route, cyclists can stop at the valley of Sóller, Valdemossa, Estellencs, and other charming mountain villages. Upon reaching the destination, we advise you to go a little further and visit the Mon Port hotel, to rest and have a good lunch after an exhausting but rewarding day.
On Two Wheels through the Pla de Mallorca
The flat and mountain-less area in the interior of Mallorca is called Pla. Here, excursions are a bit simpler, and you can reach picturesque villages like Bunyola or Santa María, Consell or Orient, where the slope becomes a bit steeper again.
Selva, Caimari, and Lloseta approach the mountainous area more, but if you reach any of these towns, you will discover wonderful landscapes and corners, in addition to cobbled streets, traditional Mallorcan architecture, spectacular cuisine, and many places to visit. So many that you might have to repeat this excursion.
Heading towards one of Mallorca's most famous coves: Calobra
Depending on experience and training level, it will be advisable to start from one point or another to reach Calobra by bike.
Experienced cyclists can start from Pollença or Palma, but for those who are not as seasoned, the ideal starting point is the Lluc monastery.
During the journey, the winding road passes near Puig Major, where, with luck, you may spot some black vultures, crosses Coll dels Reis, and heads towards the so-called "tie knot."
At this point, as its name suggests, the road makes a complete turn on itself before ending, in tight curves and spectacular views, at the small beach of Calobra.
Between two cliffs over 200 meters high is the prize for cyclists: a beautiful and almost virgin cove, with pebbles, which every year becomes the setting for a magnificent concert, the Torrente de Pareis, marking the beginning of summer.
This is also where the famous excursion of the torrent ends, but we will talk about that in other entries.
