Visit Mallorca's public estates
Mallorca is dotted with natural spaces, sprawling across the Tramontana Mountain range, or lining many points along the coast. Over the years, the authorities have acquired many of these estates to turn them into public spaces for everyone and to preserve their natural and heritage values.
Many excursions depart from or arrive at one of these public estates in Mallorca, so if you enjoy nature and want to learn more about the island, we recommend not missing out on these itineraries.
Main public estates in Mallorca
Many of these estates have recreational areas and picnic areas. Additionally, they serve as the starting or ending point of an excursion, and in many of them, you can see remnants of what life was like centuries ago for the farmers of Mallorca. Here are some of the most interesting ones:
- -Son Moragues is in the municipality of Valldemossa and is very easy to reach by car from the Archduke's urbanization. In this estate, there is one of the most beautiful hiking routes in Mallorca, such as the s’Arxiduc path. You can also do the excursion to Coma dels Cairats or Ses Fontanelles, which is also one of the most popular on the island. Son Moragues has the recreational area of sa Font dels Polls and the refuge of the same name.
- -In Escorca is the estate of Cúber, which is one of the most complete areas because it combines the reservoir of the same name, a recreational area, and a refuge. Getting here is very easy, and it is also the starting point for various routes through the Tramontana Mountain range. It is most common to start with a walk around the reservoir and then hike up Morro or visit Monte de sa Font.
- -The Gabellí Petit estate is in Campanet and is very popular because here are the famous Fonts Ufanes, which gush forth with force when there are several days of continuous rainfall and are a natural spectacle not to be missed. To access the estate, you must follow the path that leads to the hermitage of Sant Miquel, where there is a parking space, and where, after about 20 minutes of walking, you reach the sources.
- -In Banyalbufar is the Planícia estate, which has been public since 2009 and occupies 25 percent of the total territory of the municipality. It is an especially rich area that has about a hundred and a half charcoal kilns, called "sitges" in Mallorcan, and almost a dozen lime kilns. The houses of Planícia are one of the most popular destinations, and you can reach them after a one-and-a-half-hour walk through the forests of the estate. In the houses, you can visit a "tafona" or oil mill to get an idea of how oil was made in ancient times or take a walk to Font de s’Obi and the Christians' cistern.
- -In Artà, we find Alqueria Vella, which provides access to the Parc Natural de Llevant. Here there are talayotic-era sites, typical country houses of Mallorcan rural life, and several military constructions.
The arrival of spring not only marks the time to return to the beaches of Mallorca. The interior and the coast have much to offer, and the excursions and hiking routes that can be done now, before the heat sets in, are numerous. So, all that's left is to choose a destination and hit the trail.
